Exam structure

One 150-question multiple-choice examination combining the Property and Casualty Broker-Agent educational objectives. Each objective set is organized into three scored sections — General Insurance (31% of exam questions), Personal Lines Insurance (Property: 40%, Casualty: 31%), and Commercial Insurance Coverages (Property: 29%, Casualty: 38%) — covering property policies (homeowners, earthquake, flood, commercial property, businessowners) and casualty coverages (personal/commercial automobile, general liability, workers' compensation, umbrella/excess, professional liability).

Where rules vary

California state licensing examination under the California Insurance Code (Section 1677 requires the Property Broker-Agent examination be of sufficient scope to satisfy the Insurance Commissioner); passing qualifies the applicant for the California Property and Casualty Broker-Agent license

Eligibility

12 hours of study on ethics and the California Insurance Code (California Insurance Code section 1749) — recommended before the examination and required before the license is issued

Retake policy

Retesters must re-register and pay the fee again; an examinee who fails a license examination 10 times is barred from taking that examination for 12 months from the last failed attempt (California Insurance Code section 1682)
