Exam structure
Two portions of multiple-choice items taken in one sitting: a National/General portion (85 items, of which 80 are scored across sections such as real property characteristics, contracts, financing, and agency) and a Texas State Law portion (50 items, of which 40 are scored); both portions must be passed
Where rules vary
Texas-specific licensing exam: the national portion is shared with other states' programs but the state law portion is Texas-only; the national portion can be waived for holders of an active ARELLO-accredited license in another state.
Eligibility
Complete all prelicensing education, file a salesperson application with TREC, and receive a TREC eligibility letter (with TREC ID) before scheduling; fingerprints/background check via IDEMIA required for licensure
Retake policy
Retake only the failed portion within one year of the application date; 24-hour wait before rescheduling; three attempts to pass both portions before the application expires, after which 30 additional classroom hours (one portion failed) or 60 hours (both portions failed) of qualifying education are required before retesting
