Life, Accident and Health or Sickness Examination (California)

The Life, Accident and Health or Sickness examination is the combined California Department of Insurance producer licensing examination that candidates pass to qualify as a 'full Life Agent' holding both the Life-Only Agent and Accident and Health Agent license types; it is administered under a CDI contract with PSI Services LLC at California test centers or via online remote proctoring.

Exam structure

One 150-question multiple-choice examination combining the Life and the Accident and Health or Sickness License Examination Objectives (75 questions each). Life objectives: General Insurance (22 questions, 30%), Life Insurance (49, 65%), and Life Policy Riders (4, 5%). Accident and Health objectives: General Insurance (18, 25%), General Concepts of Medical and Disability Insurance (4, 5%), Medical Expense Insurance (45, 60%), Disability Income Insurance (4, 5%), and Long-Term Care Insurance (4, 5%).

Where rules vary

California state producer licensing examination under the California Insurance Code (section 1749 requires 12 hours of study on ethics and the California Insurance Code for life agent applicants); passing the combined examination qualifies the applicant for the California Life Agent license in both the Life-Only (LO) and Accident and Health (AH) license types

12 hours of study on ethics and the California Insurance Code (California Insurance Code section 1749) — recommended before the examination and required before the license is issued

Retake policy

Retesters must re-register and pay the fee again; an examinee who fails a license examination 10 times is barred from taking that examination for 12 months from the last failed attempt (California Insurance Code section 1682)
