Michigan Nurse Aide Competency Exam
The Michigan Nurse Aide Competency Exam is the two-part state competency evaluation required for registration on the Michigan Nurse Aide Registry: a 65-question, 60-minute multiple-choice knowledge exam (74% or better to pass, audio version available) and a manual skill test of three or four randomly selected tasks performed within 30 minutes for an RN Test Observer (all critical steps and 80% of non-key steps required on each task), both administered by D&S Diversified Technologies-Headmaster under contract with LARA's Bureau of Community and Health Systems for a USD 175.00 initial fee covering both components.

Exam structure
Two components: (1) a 65-question multiple-choice knowledge exam drawn from twelve subject areas per the LARA-approved Michigan test plan — Aging Process and Restorative Care 4, Basic Nursing Skills 10, Care Impaired 3, Communication 6, Data Collection 3, Disease Process 3, Infection Control 7, Mental Health 4, Personal Care 5, Resident Rights 6, Role and Responsibility 7, Safety 7 — with an audio (oral) version available on request; and (2) a manual skill test of three or four randomly assigned tasks with scenarios, scored on all critical steps and 80% of non-key steps per task
Where rules vary
Michigan state nurse aide registration exam conducted under federal OBRA '87 requirements and the LARA-approved Michigan test plan; passing both portions is required for listing on the Michigan Nurse Aide Registry maintained by LARA's Bureau of Community and Health Systems.
Eligibility
Completion of a state-permitted nurse aide training program (minimum of 75 course hours) whose instructor enters the training record in TMU; candidates have three attempts to pass both portions within twenty-four (24) months of training program completion
Retake policy
Three attempts to pass the knowledge and skill portions within 24 months of training completion; a failed portion must be paid for again (USD 175.00 per component) before scheduling a retake; after 24 months or three failed attempts, a new training program is required
