Exam structure
Computer-based multiple-choice examination assessing five ability areas: Remembering Facts and Information (memory of an incident story read for 5 minutes, tested after a 10-minute delay), Reading, Understanding and Interpreting Written Material (passage-based questions plus sentence-completion items), Applying Facts and Information to Given Situations (applying court-officer regulations/policies to scenarios), Clerical Checking (comparing near-identical names, numbers, letters, codes), and Court Record Keeping (combining and reorganizing table-based information).

Eligibility
Open-competitive with no age restriction to sit the exam; minimum qualifications apply at appointment: at least 20.5 years old, U.S. citizen, New York State resident, high school diploma or equivalent, valid NYS driver's license, and legal eligibility to carry firearms; successful written-exam candidates must then pass a four-phase screening (physical ability test/vision/fingerprints; written psychological tests/background investigation; psychological interview/evaluation board; pre-appointment medical exam)
Retake policy
No within-cycle retake policy is published; the exam runs in periodic cycles — candidates who passed a prior cycle's exam (45-841 or 45-843) but were not appointed must take the new examination because those eligible lists expire when the 45-857 list is established; appointments may be rescheduled up to 24 hours in advance if seating is available
