Exam structure
One of three PERT subject-area tests (mathematics, reading, writing), each with 30 computer-adaptive selected-response questions that cannot be revisited once answered; mathematics content: equations (linear, linear inequalities, quadratic, literal), evaluating algebraic expressions, polynomials (factoring, simplifying, arithmetic), dividing by monomials and binomials, applying standard algorithms/concepts, coordinate planes, and pairs of simultaneous linear equations in two variables; no personal calculator — a pop-up 4-function calculator appears on certain items
Where rules vary
The PERT is Florida's statewide common placement test, administered to students in Florida public high schools and Florida College System institutions; the exam itself is uniform statewide (institutions differ only in local testing, retake, and fee policies). Once completed, scores are accessible to all FCS college testing centers without the student sending them.
Eligibility
Required for degree-seeking Florida College System students unless exempt under s. 1008.30 F.S. (e.g., students who entered 9th grade in a Florida public school in 2003-04 or later and earned a Florida standard high school diploma, and active-duty U.S. Armed Services members)
Retake policy
Set by each institution (Miami Dade College: two attempts per subtest before enrolling in that subject area, with preparation/remediation required before retesting; Valencia College: 3 attempts per section per two-year period with a 1-day wait; Pasco-Hernando State College: two attempts in a two-year period, third only by approval)
