The ASE A1 Engine Repair certification test is the Automobile/Light Truck series certification exam for engine-repair technicians: a 55-question (45 scored, 10 unscored research) multiple-choice computer-based test with 75 minutes allowed, taken in English or Spanish at Prometric test centers (remote testing available only for the separate A1R recertification test), for a USD 62 test fee plus a USD 34 per-order registration fee.

One 55-question (45 scored) multiple-choice test across five content areas per the ASE test specifications: General Engine Diagnosis (18 questions), Cylinder Head and Valve Train Diagnosis and Repair (6), Engine Block Diagnosis and Repair (4), Lubrication and Cooling Systems Diagnosis and Repair (8), and Fuel, Electrical, Ignition, Air Induction and Exhaust Systems Diagnosis and Service (9)
ASE certification testing is offered in the United States, U.S. territories, and Canada; U.S. military personnel can additionally take tests on certain overseas bases
No prerequisite to sit the A1 test (certification tests may be taken before documenting experience); to become certified, candidates must pass and document 2 years full-time hands-on Repair Technician work experience (up to half may be met by vocational training)
After failing, wait 30 full days before purchasing and scheduling the same test again (full test and registration fees apply again)
