Exam structure
Three components: (1) Human Relations Test — video-based situational judgment, candidates watch a video segment and choose the best course of action in multiple-choice format with 10 seconds per question; (2) Report Writing Test in two parts — write a factual report describing a video scenario (scenario shown twice, then 10 minutes to write), then answer multiple-choice questions based on that report; (3) Multiple-Choice Reading Test — choose the word that best fits in the blank, based on actual law-enforcement job materials.

The exam itself is uniform and used by law enforcement departments across the U.S. through NTN's national test-center network and virtual testing; individual departments choose their own scoring standards.
Eligibility
No exam-specific prerequisites; candidates must meet the chosen department's minimum job requirements, and all posted NTN jobs require applicants to be at least 18 years of age
Retake policy
Minimum three-month wait to retake the standard computer-administered test; retesting deletes previous scores and department selections
