Exam structure
A single 50-question written knowledge test on the New Jersey Driver Manual content (New Jersey motor vehicle and traffic laws, safe driving practices, road signs), plus one organ-donation survey question; delivered as a written test in 13 languages, or as an oral test with headphones (English and Spanish); a vision screening (20/50 for basic license applicants) is required at the same visit but is a separate test
Where rules vary
The knowledge test is the New Jersey state driver licensing knowledge test, administered by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission at its driver testing centers; it applies statewide in New Jersey under the state's Graduated Driver License (GDL) system.

Purchase of an examination permit (auto) with 6 Points of ID verification at an MVC agency; minimum age 16 for a GDL learner permit, 17 for a non-GDL examination permit
