Exam structure
150 multiple-choice items (130 scored, 20 pretest) across six domains: Data Content, Structure, and Information Governance (19-25%); Access, Disclosure, Privacy, and Security (14-18%); Data Analytics and Use (12-18%); Revenue Cycle Management (19-25%); Compliance (13-17%); and Leadership (9-12%).
Where rules vary
U.S. national certification; the blueprint is anchored to U.S. regulation (CMS, Joint Commission, U.S. privacy law). International candidates may test at any open Pearson VUE center, and AHIMA holds exam reciprocity agreements with CHIMA (Canada), KMRA (Korea), and HIMAA (Australia), but the exam identity itself is the single U.S. RHIT exam.
Eligibility
Associate-degree-level completion of a CAHIIM-accredited Health Information Management program, or graduation from an HIM program approved by a foreign association with which AHIMA has a reciprocity agreement; official transcripts must be received and approved before the application is approved
Retake policy
30-day waiting period before a new application is approved; a retake requires a new application and payment of the full exam fee (transcripts stay on file)
