Exam structure

150 multiple-choice items (130 scored, 20 pretest) across five domains: Data and Information Governance (17–20%); Compliance with Access, Use, and Disclosure of Health Information (15–18%); Data Analytics and Informatics (23–26%); Revenue Cycle Management (20–23%); Management and Leadership (23–26%)

Where rules vary

U.S. national health information certification exam; graduates of approved foreign HIM programs (CHIMA Canada, KMRA Korea, HIMAA Australia) may also sit under reciprocity

Eligibility

Graduation from a CAHIIM-accredited baccalaureate or master's-level HIM program or CAHIIM-approved post-baccalaureate HIM certificate (foreign HIM graduates eligible under reciprocity with CHIMA/KMRA/HIMAA); health informatics degrees not accepted

Retake policy

New application plus full exam fee required; RHIA candidates must wait 30 days before the retake application is approved (waiting periods cannot be waived)
