Firefighter Testing System (FireTEAM)

FireTEAM is the video-based, computer-administered entry-level firefighter testing system administered by National Testing Network at its testing centers and through virtual testing; it was developed by Ergometrics & Applied Research Inc. and comprises a Human Relations Test (two parts), a Mechanical Test, a Reading Test, and a Math Test with a total test time of approximately 2 hours, after which scores are made instantly available to the fire departments the candidate applies to (no universal passing score - each department sets its own scoring standards).

Exam structure

Four test components, all presented on video in multiple-choice (or fill-in-the-blank) format: (1) Human Relations Test in two parts - Part I video scenarios with multiple-choice best-action items that play without stopping, Part II questions about the characters portrayed, immediately following Part I; (2) Mechanical Test - video-based multiple-choice mechanical aptitude built around an animated brick-making factory; (3) Reading Test - choose the word that best fits in the blank; (4) Math Test - questions presented on video, all calculations done in the head with no written calculation permitted

Where rules vary

A uniform candidate test administered to firefighter (and other public-safety) applicants across the United States through NTN testing centers and virtual testing; departments in each state/jurisdiction choose which scores to require and how to score them, but the exam itself does not vary by subdivision. NTN's department-services site describes serving departments across North America, but the candidate program documented on these pages is U.S.-based.
