Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test
The Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test is a computer-based test that applicants for a NSW heavy vehicle licence (classes LR, MR, HR, HC or MC) must pass before starting a Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) or booking a heavy vehicle driving test. Exam structure
One computer-based multiple-choice test of 45 questions on general road rules and heavy-vehicle-specific road safety, with questions drawn from official question banks (general knowledge, road safety and traffic sign questions, plus heavy rigid or heavy combination items); two class-linked variants (Heavy vehicle rigid for LR/MR/HR; Heavy vehicle combination for HC/MC), of which the candidate attempts only one. Test content is covered by the Heavy Vehicle Driver Handbook, Road User Handbook and Load Restraint Guide.

Eligibility
Applicants must be applying for a heavy vehicle licence class; for the driving-test pathway, eligibility requires having held a class C (car) licence or equivalent for at least 1 year and applying for an LR, MR, HR or HC class (MC applicants must complete HVCBA instead); before attempting the test, candidates are directed to read the Heavy Vehicle Driver Handbook, Road User Handbook and Load Restraint Guide
Retake policy
If you fail, you may be able to re-sit the test on the same day depending on availability, or book another time; you pay the test fee each time you attempt the test. (Cheating on the knowledge test bars you from taking another test for 6 weeks, per the official question bank.)
