Exam structure
150 scored multiple-choice items across seven domains: Foundational Knowledge and Basic Science (15), Anatomy and Physiology (8), Clinical Patient Care (84 — Patient Intake and Vitals 14, General Patient Care 28, Infection Control and Safety 15, Point of Care Testing and Laboratory Procedures 9, Phlebotomy 12, EKG and Cardiovascular Testing 6), Patient Care Coordination and Education (12), Administrative Assisting (12), Communication and Customer Service (12), Medical Law and Ethics (7); plus 30 unscored pretest items

U.S. national certification exam (several states recognize NHA MA certification for state registration, but the exam itself is uniform and nationwide)
Eligibility
High school diploma/GED (or earning one within 12 months) plus EITHER completion of a medical assistant training/education program within the last 5 years OR 1 year of supervised medical-assisting work experience within the last 3 years (or 2 years within the last 5)
Retake policy
Up to 3 attempts with a minimum 30-day waiting period between attempts; after the third failed attempt, a 1-year wait applies; each retake requires re-registration and full exam fee
