Exam structure
210 four-option multiple-choice items in three work areas: General Medical Assisting (65 items, 31.0%), Administrative Medical Assisting (30 items, 14.0%), and Clinical Medical Assisting (115 items, 55%). Items may require recalling facts, interpreting graphics or case studies, analyzing situations, or solving problems; unscored pretest items may be embedded.
Where rules vary
U.S. national certification exam; Pearson VUE delivery is also available at overseas test centers, but the credential and exam are U.S.-based.
Eligibility
Must qualify under one of AMT's RMA eligibility routes: graduation (within the past 4 years) from an accredited medical assisting program, a competency/work-based learning route, 3 years of medical assistant employment within the past 7 years, recent U.S. military medical services training, or medical assisting instructor status
Retake policy
A failed exam may be retaken 45 days later; lifetime limit of four attempts per AMT certification; a retesting fee is required for each retake
