U.S. national credentialing exam from the Overland Park, Kansas-based NBRC: one uniform PFT Examination administered by computer at nearly 300 secure PSI testing locations across the United States and internationally; admission requirements are keyed to U.S./CoARC-accredited education, NBRC credentials, or U.S.-accredited college credit (Canadian CSRT RRTs are also eligible), and the handbook notes examination results may be released to U.S. state licensure agencies.
At least 18 years old AND one of: graduate with a minimum of an associate degree from a CoARC-accredited/supported entry-into-practice respiratory therapy education program; NBRC CRT or RRT credential; 62 semester hours of college credit from a regionally accredited institution including college-level biology and mathematics; CSRT RRT credential; or current CPFT seeking the RPFT credential
Two initial attempts without a waiting period, then a minimum of 180 days between any subsequent attempt (specialty-exam policy table); repeat application fee USD 170; CPFT holders may retake as many times as needed to earn the RPFT without affecting the CPFT credential; eligibility records are inactivated one year after application if not used
