EPPP (Part 1-Knowledge)
The EPPP (Part 1-Knowledge) is the classic multiple-choice psychology licensure examination developed and administered by ASPPB on behalf of its 66 member boards in the U.S. and Canada: 225 items (175 scored, 50 unscored pretest) answered in 4 hours 15 minutes at Pearson VUE centers, scored 200-800 with a recommended passing score of 500 for independent practice. All 66 jurisdictions require it; the separate EPPP (Part 2-Skills) is required only by some jurisdictions.

Exam structure
Single computer-delivered multiple-choice exam (225 items, 175 scored) across eight content domains with fixed percentages: Biological Bases of Behavior 10%, Cognitive-Affective Bases of Behavior 13%, Social and Cultural Bases of Behavior 11%, Growth and Lifespan Development 12%, Assessment and Diagnosis 16%, Treatment, Intervention, Prevention and Supervision 15%, Research Methods and Statistics 7%, Ethical/Legal/Professional Issues 16%
Where rules vary
One uniform exam used by 66 licensing jurisdictions across the United States and Canada; each licensing authority sets the passing standard it applies and decides whether the separate Part 2-Skills exam is also required. New York applies a converted passing score of 75 rather than the 500 scale.
Eligibility
Candidates must first apply for licensure as a psychologist with the licensing authority in the state, province, or territory where they seek licensure; the authority authorizes testing (Authorization to Test delivered via the Certemy registration portal) based on its own education/experience requirements (typically a doctorate and supervised experience)
Retake policy
Retakes require licensing-authority approval and vary by authority (waiting periods, attempt rules); ASPPB caps either part of the EPPP at no more than four attempts in any 12-month period and recommends waiting about 90 days between attempts
