State of Texas Massage Therapist Examination
The State of Texas Massage Therapist Examination is a TDLR-approved route for satisfying the state's massage-therapist examination requirement. It is a closed-book, computer-based PSI exam with 100 scored and 10 unscored multiple-choice items, 150 minutes of testing time plus 15 minutes for instructions, a 70% passing score, and a USD 60 fee. Applicants may instead qualify through the MBLEx plus the Texas Massage Therapist Jurisprudence Exam.

Exam structure
One closed-book, computer-based exam of 100 scored multiple-choice items (plus 10 non-scored items) across nine subject areas: Swedish Massage Therapy Techniques and Theory 38%; Anatomy 12%; Kinesiology 12%; Pathology 11%; Physiology 6%; Laws and Rules 8%; Ethics 5%; Health, Hygiene, and Universal Precautions 4%; Hydrotherapy 4%. The Laws and Rules content is why state-exam takers are exempt from the separate Texas Jurisprudence Exam
Where rules vary
Texas state licensure examination required by TDLR for the Massage Therapist license under Texas Occupations Code Chapter 455 and Texas Administrative Code Chapter 117; the exam reference list cites Texas Administrative Code Chapter 117 and candidates must test at PSI centers in Texas
Eligibility
TDLR eligibility approval and a submitted license application before exam scheduling; completion of an approved massage therapy studies program of at least 500 hours per Texas Administrative Code 117.20 (for the state exam path the hours may be completed at a college or an out-of-state school rather than a Texas-licensed massage school); fingerprinting is required before a license is issued
Retake policy
Unlimited testing attempts through the eligibility period (a separate fee per attempt); free rescheduling with notice at least 2 days before the appointment; exam fee forfeited if the candidate does not test within 1 year of payment
