General Securities Representative Qualification Examination (Series 7)

The Series 7 exam is the FINRA qualification exam that assesses the competency of an entry-level General Securities Representative; together with the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) co-requisite exam it qualifies a candidate for General Securities registration.

Exam structure

125 scored multiple-choice items (four answer choices each) across four major job functions: Seeks Business for the Broker-Dealer from Customers and Potential Customers (9 items, 7%); Opens Accounts after Obtaining and Evaluating Customers' Financial Profile and Investment Objectives (11, 9%); Provides Customers with Information about Investments, Makes Recommendations, Transfers Assets and Maintains Appropriate Records (91, 73%); Obtains and Verifies Customers' Purchase and Sales Instructions and Agreements; Processes, Completes and Confirms Transactions (14, 11%).

Eligibility

Candidate must be associated with and sponsored by a FINRA member firm or other applicable self-regulatory organization (SRO); the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam is a corequisite that must also be passed for General Securities Representative registration

Retake policy

30-day waiting period after the first and second failed attempts; 180-day waiting period after the third and each subsequent attempt (FINRA states this waiting period is the same as for its other exams)
