90 selected-response questions across three subject areas — reading, mathematics, and writing; within each subject area approximately two-thirds of questions focus on basic skills and knowledge and approximately one-third on applying those skills in a classroom context
One uniform nationwide test (ParaPro 1755), but qualifying scores are set by each state or school district (published state qualifying scores range 450–467; district-set scores range 440–467), and the U.S. Virgin Islands also sets a qualifying score (466).
Effective June 22, 2024: the test may be retaken once immediately; after two attempts within that pattern, further retakes require a 7-day wait after the most recent attempt (applies to both at-home and test-center testing)
