Exam structure
Twelve testing blocks of 30 multiple-choice questions each (33 minutes per block), preceded by an optional 10-minute tutorial, with 50 minutes of break time usable between blocks
Where rules vary
Requirement for licensure in all US and Canadian licensing jurisdictions; delivered in the US, Puerto Rico, Guam, other US territories, Canada, and certain international sites.
Eligibility
Graduation from or enrollment in an AVMA COE-accredited school or college of veterinary medicine (or ECFVG/PAVE certification for graduates of non-accredited schools, with BCSE or QSE requirement completed first)
Retake policy
Beginning with the March 2026 testing window, all candidates are granted five new opportunities to take the NAVLE regardless of prior testing history; attempts before December 1, 2025 do not count toward the five-attempt limit
