Exam structure
One 150-question exam mapped to four dialysis practice areas with published weights: Clinical (48–52% of test), Technical (21–25%), Environment (13–17%), and Role Responsibilities (10–14%); cognitive-level distribution is Knowledge 8–13%, Comprehension 23–28%, Application 63–67%.
Where rules vary
U.S. national certification: applicants must meet the training and experience requirements of the CMS Conditions for Coverage for ESRD facilities (which mandate technician certification) plus any state requirements; NNCC also publishes an outside-the-U.S. testing page, but the credential identity is U.S.-based.
Eligibility
High school diploma or GED; successful completion of a clinical hemodialysis technician training program including classroom instruction and supervised clinical experience; must meet CMS Conditions for Coverage training and experience requirements; six months (or 1,000 hours) of clinical experience recommended
Retake policy
No limit on the number of attempts; reapply with a new application (online FAST TRACK expedited processing available for an additional fee)
