Where rules vary

A California state licensing requirement for clinical social work candidates: the exam must be attempted annually until passed to renew an Associate (ASW) Registration, and must be passed to receive a subsequent Associate Registration and to become fully licensed as an LCSW in California

Eligibility

Associate Clinical Social Worker (ASW) registrants must attempt the exam at least once per renewal cycle until passed; the exam must be passed to receive a subsequent Associate Registration and to become fully licensed; out-of-state applicants not applying for an Associate registration must have an approved Application for Licensure to receive authorization to take the exam; passing the LCSW California Law and Ethics Exam is also required before registering for the ASWB Clinical Exam

Retake policy

Re-exam application may be submitted any time after an attempt, but eligibility is not sent to Pearson VUE until a 90-day waiting period from the last exam attempt has elapsed; a separate re-exam application and fee are required
