Medical Laboratory Technician, MLT(ASCP)
The MLT(ASCP) certification examination of the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) assesses routine clinical laboratory testing knowledge in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, immunology, microbiology, urinalysis/body fluids, and laboratory operations; the same exam is also taken by international candidates for the MLT(ASCPi) credential.

Exam structure
100 multiple-choice items (one best answer), delivered by computer adaptive testing, spread across seven content areas with published percentage bands: Blood Banking (15–20%), Chemistry (20–25%), Hematology (20–25%), Microbiology (15–20%), Immunology (5–10%), Urinalysis and Other Body Fluids (5–10%), and Laboratory Operations (5–10%).
Where rules vary
One exam with two credential categories: MLT(ASCP) and the international MLT(ASCPi); delivered at Pearson testing centers, with reduced pricing for applicants educated and residing in low-to-middle income countries. A distinct shortened MLT administration (80 questions, 2 hours) exists for California state licensure only and is a separate state-licensure version, not this exam.
Eligibility
Must satisfy one of the published eligibility routes — e.g., associate degree (or 60 semester hours) from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of a NAACLS- or ABHES-accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program within the last 5 years; other routes combine an associate degree with specified chemistry/biology coursework plus a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course, or 3 years of full-time acceptable clinical experience (ASCPi routes for internationally educated applicants); MLT Route 2 (valid CLA(ASCP) certification) was discontinued as of January 1, 2023
Retake policy
Examination may be taken five times under one eligibility route; after five unsuccessful attempts under one route the applicant must meet the requirements of an alternate route; each attempt requires a new application and full application fee, and the new eligibility period begins no earlier than 30 days after the previous examination date
